Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her believed that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the ocean.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They cause harm to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative, on a plan that would eventually take her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the remainder of her life and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean itself, not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita's current condition. As her captor does not have to disclose the information, it's unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the death of captive orcas.
Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita, many people are hopeful that she may be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can swim deep in the water and perhaps be reunited with her orca mother. These plans were too late to save the whale, which died on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
